Greens Back Exclusive Brethren request
The Greens have voted for a statement from the Exclusive Brethren sect to be incorporated into the Senate Hansard (127th report of the Committee of Privileges)
The statement from three elders of the sect is in response to Senator Bob Brown's call for a Senate inquiry into the Exclusive Brethren's social and political activities.
"It is a pity that the Exclusive Brethren members did not offer the Greens such a hearing before launching into expensive and false advertising tirades against the Greens and Labor in recent Australian and New Zealand elections," Senator Brown said.
"I have received heart rending letters from families involving people ex-communicated from loved ones associated with the sect, those people received no 'right of reply'. And while I welcome this group's members' involvement in politics here and overseas, the quid pro quo is openness and transparency in their activities," Senator Brown said.
"When members in grotesque masks enter election campaigns, as in Tasmania this March, they should not be surprised by people wanting to know more about them," Senator Brown said.
Senator Brown will move his motion for the Senate inquiry on 9th August.
