Howard's anti-gay move

Published: Wed 7 Jun 2006 09:44 PM
Greens move to stymie Howard's anti-gay move.
The Greens will move a disallowance motion in the Senate to block the
Prime Minister's regulation overturning the ACT's civil union laws for same sex couples.
Greens Leader Bob Brown says that Mr Howard is Australia's 21st century wowser.
"This is a Howard hate regulation. He has come back from Washington keen to follow President Bush's anti-gay marriage campaign," Senator Brown said.
"Federal Labor should join the Greens and, I'm sure, the Democrats.
Then it will need just two fair-minded government members to also vote 'yes' for the disallowance motion and the ACT laws will stand,' Senator Brown said.
"The Stanhope government had an electoral mandate for its Civil Unions law, Mr Howard has got President Bush's approval but not the Australian public's," Senator Brown said.
