New Caledonian union boosted by Bove talk
The New Caledonian USTKE union says a French anti-globalisation campaigner, Jose Bove, encouraged the union to continue its fight against multi-national companies entering the territory’s market.
This comes three weeks after the union took control of the port in Noumea to stop shipping giants Maersk and MSC from setting up a service to Noumea amid fears that they could monopolise the market.
An USTKE representative, Pierre Chauvat, says Mr Bove also criticised the Goro Nickel project in the territory’s South for not conforming with rules.
“At the press conference was Jose Bove from France. It was about Goro Nickel must obey to the local indigenous rules in the South. He also talked about the port situation, about these global shipping transport [companies], such as Maersk and MSC, that are coming to the country. He has encouraged USTKE to continue in its struggle.”
