Statement on Indonesian Earthquake
Secretary Condoleezza Rice
Washington, DC
May 27, 2006
I would like to join President Bush in expressing my sincere condolences at the loss of lives and injuries resulting
from the large earthquake near historic Yogyakarta, Indonesia. There are reports of more than 2,900 deaths so far. We
stand with the people and Government of Indonesia at this difficult time.
The President has announced an emergency allocation of $500,000 for assistance to earthquake victims. Several U.S.
Agency for International Development personnel are in Yogyakarta and the surrounding area determining how this
assistance can best be targeted.
We will continue to follow this situation closely to ensure that U.S. citizens in the affected area receive assistance
and to help the Government of Indonesia respond to this disaster.
