PNG Parliament considers redefining the responsibilities and duties of leaders
Papua New Guinea’s parliament has past the first bill to amend the Organic Law on the Duties and Responsibilities of Leadership.
The Post Courier reports the move is to ensure investigations are restricted to within the rules of evidence.
Parliament passed the first reading of a Private Member’s Bill to let the tribunal make inquiries within legal formalities and in compliance with the Evidence Act.
The sponsor of the Bill, Jimi MP Francis Kunai told Parliament the proposed amendment did not imply that leaders were above the law but would ensure tribunals only accept credible evidence.
The bill caps off weeks of scrutiny that the state-owned corruption watchdog has been subjected to in Parliament amid the recent announcement of a Parliamentary select committee to review the operation of the Ombudsman Commission.
