SENATOR KERRY NETTLE: Howard must call for killings in West Papua to end
Howard must call for killings in West Papua to end
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today called on the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to ensure that Indonesia stops the killings in West Papua.
"Mr Howard and Downer need to step in and ensure that the Indonesian government stops using lethal force against protesters in West Papua," said Senator Nettle.
"The recent escalation of violence in West Papua is shocking and as responsible neighbours with a commitment to human rights the Australian Government needs to do all we can to ensure that this bloodshed does not continue or escalate.
"The use of lethal force by the Indonesian authorities in West Papua is not helping to calm the situation.
"The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister often boast of the close relationship we have with Indonesia. Now is the time to ring President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and call on him to stop the use of lethal force in West Papua," concluded Senator Nettle.
