Greens support 'Black GST' campaign
This morning in Melbourne a statement of support from Senator Rachel
Siewert was presented to organisers of Camp Sovereignty. The camp has been established by the Black GST campaign to mark
the 'Stolenwealth Games' and put the demands of Indigenous Australians firmly on the global agenda.
The statement reads in part: "...the Greens will work with Aboriginal peoples towards redressing the grave injustices of
the past and seeking guidance from Indigenous Australians as to the best way to do so."
The Black GST was established around three objectives: for Genocide to end, Sovereignty to be acknowledged, and a Treaty
to be made. The Greens are fully supportive of these objectives and the spirit of non-violent resistance which underlies
them.
"I congratulate the Elders and organisers of this camp who have welcomed all Australians to sit down with them and hear
their stories," Senator Siewert said.
"Camp Sovereignty is a unique opportunity for all of us to hear first hand the impacts of ten years of the Howard
Government in rolling back the meagre progress which had been made under previous Governments."
"Set against a backdrop of two hundred years of occupation, Howard's record stands out as a lost decade for Indigenous
people."
The camp will be open for the duration of the 'Stolenwealth' Games, and Senator Siewert has urged all Australians to get
behind the Black GST campaign.
