Cracks in the Ice - January issue of The Other Israel is out
During the past period the Israeli political scene went through so many upheavals that it is hard to remember how things looked only months ago. While the health reports of Sharon appeared daily in media all over the world The Other Israel's lead article tries to dig behind the surface, highlighting the undercurrents which created new possibilities.
Furthermore, there are descriptions from the ongoing struggle for Israeli public opinion. There is news about ever new refusniks - including an extensive interview with Uri Nathan in between his series of prison terms, a piece on feminist refuser Idan Halili, and - yes again - the upcoming imprisonment of Yoni Ben Artzi . You read about the Olive War with hundreds of trees destroyed by settlers and kibbutzniks joining on the Palestinian side. We gave again a portion of attention to Bil'in's campaign of Palestinians, Israelis and internationals together, about the furst Palestinian 'outpost' and how this helped to at last breaking through to the Israeli public debate. Also in this issue an evaluation of Tali Fahima plea bargain and an impression of how Mordechai Vanunu gets on. We included some remarkably critical views expressed in the mainstream media. Last but not least, Uri Avnery reads the cards of the upcoming Israeli elections.
