Government must tell the truth about Habib
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today called on the Federal Government to come clean with what they knew about Mamdouh Habib's whereabouts and treatment.
"Documents revealed in today's media make it clear that the Federal
Government knew of the whereabouts and treatment of Mamdouh Habib when he was rendered to Egypt by US authorities in 2001," Senator Nettle said.
"The Federal Government needs to tell the truth about what it knew and why it failed to act on the basis of this information. Documents show that Mamdouh told Australian and US officials of the torture he had experienced in Egypt when he first arrived at Guantanamo Bay in 2002.
"Documents also show that Ministers and officials were directed to lie about what information the Government had on Mamdouh Habib.
"As an Australian citizen Mamdouh Habib deserved and deserves much better from his government, as does David Hicks," Senator Nettle said.
