Annan condemns Afghanistan attacks that killed reconstruction official and others
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today condemned the recent series of violent attacks in Afghanistan which took the lives of an official of a Canadian reconstruction team and an unconfirmed number of other civilian and military personnel.
The attacks, which took place in Kandahar on 15 and 16 January, are “an unacceptable assault upon the peace process,” according to a statement delivered by spokesman Stephane Dujarric, who added that Mr. Annan “urges all concerned parties to work together in a spirit of national unity and reconciliation.”
Glyn Berry, the Political Director of the Canadian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team, was among those killed yesterday.
“Mr. Berry has served as a Vice-Chair of the UN General Assembly’s Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations and Chair of the Committee’s Working Group,” Mr. Dujarric said. “He will be missed by his friends and colleagues.”
