Debnam crude response to Cronulla riot exposed
Peter Debnam's response to the Cronulla riot and the subsequent revenge attacks has been designed for political
self-interest rather than to deal with complex social problems Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said today.
"Mr Debnam's recent comments about ethnic gangs and his accusation that police had gone soft on people of middle eastern
backgrounds involved in reprisal attacks following the Cronulla riot are disgraceful," Ms Rhiannon said.
"Once again Mr Debnam has shown he is not up to being leader of NSW.
His constant harping about ethnic gangs is divisive and destructive.
"He has made a serious allegation that the NSW police are concentrating on Cronulla rioters who are of predominantly
Anglo-Celtic background rather than on ethnic groups involved in revenge attacks. He has not substantiated his
allegation.
"If Mr Debnam has information about such a serious charge surely he should take the Police Minster's advice and inform
the Police Integrity Commission or the corruption watchdog ICAC.
"Mr Debnam should drop his divisive tactics, stop trying to make political mileage out of ethnic descriptors and address
the social challenges the Cronulla riot and its aftermath revealed," Ms Rhiannon said.
