Greenhouse School Student Wins Top Art Honor
SALEM--As the "youngest" of triplets, Timothy Bogomolov is constantly reminded by his "older" siblings, Larisa and
Alexander, that he was the last born. This time, however, it is Timothy's turn to shine. The second grader at The
Greenhouse School in Salem is the only artist in all of Massachusetts to have his work displayed in the traveling Pentel
International Children's Exhibit, hosted this month by the Silver Lake Middle School in Kingston.
The Pentel exhibit solicits artwork from students all over the world, compiles an exhibit of winning entries and sends
them on tour to a variety of international sites. Greenhouse School students have been sending in their artwork for
several years, and always manage to grab a prize or two. "Our kids have had winning entries on many occasions," says the
school's Assistand Director Julia Nambalirwa-Lugudde. "But this is the first time one of the exhibit venues has been
close enough for us to go!" She and colleague Sue Wright are visibly excited when the give the good news to the kids.
What may seem a bit unusual to those unfamiliar with The Greenhouse School is how happy his classmates are for him. Not
at all, counters the school's director Dan Welch. "When Timmy wins, we all win," he told the students. "Do you realize
that one of our students will have the only piece on display from all of Massachusetts? It's fantastic!"
Besides, Welch elaborates, this honor really is a feather in the cap of the Greenhouse School art program. "Julia and
Sue work really hard to get the best out of all our kids; there's no sense of being 'good at art' or 'bad at art.' We
treat it like just another strand in our curriculum."
The exhibit will open Saturday, January 7 from 11-2 at the Silver Lake Middle School in Kingston, MA. The artwork will
continue to be on display all month, however, and will be open to the public in the evenings. Timothy's piece, a tempra
painting in monochrome blues, is entitled Girl of Hope, and was part of a series on abstract faces from the children's
exploration of Picasso's work. The Pentel announcement comes at an interesting time for the school, whose art program
received a significant boost last fall through a generous donation of art books, supplies and materials from Needham
artist Gail Rosenthal. And next month, artwork by Greenhouse School students will also be on display through an exhibit

Pentel's International Children's Art Exhibit The current International Children's Art Exhibit, the 35th ICAE, at Silver
Lake Middle School is on its 4th stop in a nine city(town) year long tour of the United States. A year ago children ages
3 - 15 submitted their artwork to be judged by an international panel of judges in in Japan, home of the sponsoring
company, Pentel Co., Ltd. The 2 dimensional artwork is done using a wide variety of media, such as paint, chalks,
crayon, oil pastels, pencil, markers, print and collage materials. Over 200,000 pieces of art were entered by children
from 67 countries and territories around the world. The entries from each country compete only against themselves.
Children from the U.S. submitted 1,500 creations. From these, the highest award, Supreme Gold Award, went to three young
ladies: 10 year-old Priscilla Webb of Little Rock, Arkansas
5 year-old Zenya Hrycenko of Allentown, Pennsylvania
8 year-old Madison Florance of Albuquerque, New Mexico
Photographs of the artists and copies of interviews with the artists will be on display with their art at Silver Lake's
ICAE. In addition to the Supreme Gold winners, other U.S. children were awarded: 19 U.S. Gold Awards
31 U.S. Silver Awards
40 U.S. Bronze Awards
30 U.S. Pentel Awards
Of the 1,500 entries, 6 year-old Timothy Boglomolov from Lynn, MA. was the only winner from Massachusetts. Timothy
received a Silver Award for his artwork.
Real treats for U.S. viewers are the 40 Special Japanese Award winners and an additional 40 Special Award winning
entries from 67 other countries and territories. Some of these include Poland, Hong Kong, France, Norway, Brazil,
Cambodia, Hungary, China, and many, many others.
