Security Council Congratulates Afghan People On Inauguration Of New Parliament
The Security Council has congratulated the people of Afghanistan on the inauguration of their new Parliament, which marked the completion of the political process set in motion four years ago at United Nations-sponsored talks in Bonn, Germany, after the ouster of the Taliban regime.
“The members of the Security Council reiterate the crucial importance of continued constructive cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the international community in addressing such remaining challenges in Afghanistan as security, including governance, narcotics, development and the fight against terrorism,” the 15-member body said in a press statement.
The statement, delivered by the Council President for December, United Kingdom Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry, looked forward to the launching of a new “Afghanistan Compact” at the international conference to be held in London from 31 January to 1 February.
