New York, Nov 14 2005 2:00PM
A senior United Nations political official is in Lebanon today, where he hailed the support of the country’s authorities for the world body’s probe into the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and urged Damascus to cooperate fully as well.
Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari met in Beirut with President Emile Lahoud and had talks scheduled with the Foreign Minister, Fawzei Salloukh.
Earlier, Gambari met with the Justice Minister and commended the Lebanese Government for its cooperation with the UN investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
He urged that Syria also cooperate fully, adding that the assassination was “a terrorist act” that should not go unpunished, according to a UN spokesman.
