ImpeachPAC Raises Over $20,000 in First Weekend
ImpeachPAC, a new political action committee created to support congressional candidates who favor impeaching Bush and Cheney, raised over $20,000 in its first weekend. ImpeachPAC was launched late Friday at www.impeachpac.org, and by early Sunday evening had raised $21,304 from 472 donors giving an average contribution of $45 each.
"The response to our announcement has been tremendous," said ImpeachPAC founder Bob Fertik. "As the CIA scandal sinks in, as the death toll increases in Iraq, as fresh evidence of pre-war lies is revealed, and as George Bush's polls fall through the floor, Americans are ready for a change. They want to impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney - and they are ready to do it now," Fertik said.
Over the weekend, impeachment became a major discussion topic on progressive blogs and talk shows. Technorati lists 10,196 blog posts on "impeach Bush", while Google blog search lists 11,991 posts.
Despite broad support for impeachment - and months of lobbying by activists - not a single Democrat in Congress has yet introduced Articles of Impeachment. ImpeachPAC is using internet-based fundraising to prove to Democrats that a majority of Americans will support incumbents and candidates who step forward to begin the impeachment process.
Today ImpeachPAC outlined its criteria for endorsing candidates:
Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate or House of Representatives, both incumbents and challengers
Incumbents must introduce or co-sponsor Articles of Impeachment for George Bush and Dick Cheney in 2005 or 2006
Challengers must pledge to co-sponsor Articles of Impeachment for George Bush and Dick Cheney as their first action after swearing-in in 2007
Endorsees must be "aggressive progressives" - fearless, outspoken champions of progressive values - and have the endorsement of a progressive PAC
Endorsees must run a grassroots, internet-based campaign using cutting-edge technology
ImpeachPAC has set an initial goal of raising $100,000 over the Internet "to prove to President Bush, Congress, and the media that there is intense grassroots support for impeachment, as reflected in the new Zogby poll."
A poll released on Friday and conducted by Zogby International found that 53% of American adults agreed with the statement:
"If President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment."
