UN Envoy, Iraqi Prime Minister Discuss Results Of Constitutional Referendum
New York, Oct 30 2005
The senior United Nations envoy to Iraq, Ashraf Qazi, today discussed the results of the recent constitutional referendum with the country's prime minister, Ibrahim Jaafari.
UN support for the political process as well as the latest political developments in Iraq also featured on the agenda of the meeting, which was held in Baghdad, according to the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).
In addition, the two officials discussed "the recent visit of the Secretary-General of the Arab league to Baghdad, and the lead up to the December elections," the mission said.
Yesterday, Mr. Qazi was in Kirkuk, where he met separately with Governor Abdulrahman Mustafa and representatives of other communities, including the Kirkuk Brotherhood List Representatives as well as local election officials and leaders from the Shia Arab, Sunni Arab, Kirkuk Turcoman and the Chaldo-Assyrian communities.
"He discussed with them the latest political developments in Iraq, the referendum results, the forthcoming elections and the situation in Kirkuk," UNAMI said.
During these talks the envoy emphasized the importance of an inclusive participatory process among all communities in the region. Governor Mustafa and community representatives shared their special concerns with him, and spoke of Kirkuk's importance for the country, according to the mission.
"They all sought the help of the United Nations and expressed their appreciation for its efforts, and the desire for more UN engagement in their region," UNAMI said. Mr. Qazi "reiterated the UN's commitment to remain engaged in facilitating the people of Iraq."
