Annan Condemns Attempt To Kill Prominent Lebanese Journalist
Secretary-General Kofi Annan strongly condemned the attempted assassination of a prominent and respected Lebanese journalist who was injured in an attack today, and said the perpetrators must be brought to justice.
"The Secretary-General believes that the international community should not tolerate such terrorist attacks," a spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement released in New York.
He said the callous acts "now form a pattern of onslaught not only against Lebanese citizens but also against the principles of a democratic, open society, which, most importantly, includes the freedom of the press."
The Secretary-General called on the Lebanese Government to bring to justice the perpetrators of all such attacks and to ensure an end to impunity. All parties in Lebanon were called on to preserve national unity "during these critical days."
