Afghanistan: Annan lauds voters’ ‘enthusiastic participation’ in legislative polls
Congratulating the women and men of Afghanistan on their “enthusiastic participation” in today's legislative polls, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the candidates and their supporters to cooperate fully with the electoral authorities to ensure that the process unfolds in a peaceful and orderly manner.
“Today's achievement shows once again the clear determination of the Afghan people to pursue the peaceful and democratic development of their nation,” he said in statement issued by his spokesman.
The elections for the National Assembly and Provincial Councils, following last year’s presidential poll, mark the formal completion of the Bonn accord, the international conference in Germany in 2001 that set up the country’s transitional phase after the ouster of the Taliban regime.
