Egypt: Amnesty International condemns bomb attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh
Amnesty International totally condemns the bomb attacks perpetrated on 23 July 2004 in the Egyptian Red Sea resort,
Sharm el-Sheikh, which killed more than 80 people, most or all of them civilians, and injured at least 200 others. Most
of the dead and injured were Egyptian civilians. At least eight foreign tourists were also killed.
"Our thoughts and sympathy are first and foremost with those who have become the victims of this outrage in Sharm
el-Sheikh," said Amnesty International. "There can be no valid justification or excuse for carrying out such attacks
deliberately targeting civilians. Those responsible have shown utter disregard for the most fundamental principles of
humanity."
Amnesty International said those responsible for the killings should be identified and brought to justice but urged the
Egyptian government to ensure that its forces do not commit human rights violations in their pursuit of the
perpetrators.
