Romania Faces More Rain After Floors Strike Nation
Scoop Report: Contacts in Romania say 11300 homes have been destroyed by flood-waters, and 70,000 animals have perished. Worst hit is
Romania’s south east region where much of the nation’s agricultural heart lies. Concerns exist for what this means for
the nation’s future wellbeing.
Romania’s Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu has asked for international help including food-aid to help those devastated
by the flood.
Torrential rains hit more than half of Romania over the past three weeks. The floods have killed five people and have
left thousands without shelter or food. 11,300 homes have been destroyed.
Romania’s infrastructure has also be hard hit with roads washed away, buildings swamped, and industry at a stand-still
in some areas. Around 31 counties out of Romania’s 42 have been affected.
Reuters reports Tariceanu as saying July’s floods are worse that those of April and May which had caused nearly USD$600
million worth of damage.
The BBC reports that Romania’s government has brought in its military to help restore shelter for victims of the
floods.
The Romanian Cabinet approved this morning aid packages for those who have lost their livelihoods.
The government also fears disease could break out in the disaster areas and meteorologists are predicting more rain over
the next five days.
