The top United Nations envoy in Iraq today condemned the murder of Egypt's senior diplomat in Baghdad as “a barbaric crime that violated every tenet of Islam and of civilized behaviour.”
Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative Ashraf Qazi had received the Egyptian envoy, Ihab al-Sharif, only a few days prior to his kidnapping.
Yesterday, Mr. Annan called on the Iraqi authorities to “do everything possible” to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.
