UN Expert Extends Stay in Lebanon in Preparation for 29 May Elections
New York, May 18 2005 1:00PM
The chief of the United Nations team that provides technical help for elections around the world said today she would extend her stay in Lebanon for a third week to continue her work helping to prepare for the elections scheduled to be held Sunday after next.
Since she arrived on 6 May, the Director of the UN Electoral Assistance Division, Carina Perelli, has been meeting Government officials and political figures about the elections and what technical assistance they would need to update their system after the polls on 29 May.
The UN team, which will stay on after she leaves, will also help with the deployment of international election observers, including those from the European Union (EU), who have already begun to arrive.
It will also provide a media-monitoring expert to help the Lebanese Ministry of Information and journalists to observe a voluntary code of media conduct encouraging fair and responsible elections coverage.
