Murder of former Lebanese Prime Minister meets strong condemnation
Brussels, 16th February 2005 (ICFTU Online): The murder of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, killed on
Monday (14th February 2005) in a car bomb attack, has met strong condemnation from the international trade union
movement.
14 other people were killed and 135 injured when a motorcade carrying Hariri was hit in a blast which ripped through the
Lebanese capital of Beirut. The death of Hariri, Prime Minister until his resignation in October 2004, has been
denounced widely by the United Nations, the European Union and national governments alike.
The ICFTU is calling for a full and immediate investigation by Lebanese authorities into the killing which occurred
ahead of parliamentary elections in the Middle Eastern country, tabled for May 2005.
