101 Asylum Seekers still on Nauru
as at 17th August 2004
There are still 101 asylum seekers languishing on the tiny Pacific Island of Nauru. These people have been held there
for nearly 3 years under the Australian Government's "Pacific Solution" which was initiated on 27th August, 2001 during
a federal election campaign.
Details of those still incarcerated are as follows:
Total number 101 (+1 off shore for medical treatment)
97 are in the Topside Camp
4 are in the Statehouse
23 of these people are expected to be resettled soon because they have been able to show that they are in need of
protection by UNHCR, others need family and friends to corroborate their stories, this can be often difficult, given
displacements and lack of communication.
Their nationalities are as follows:
Afghan 51
Iraqi 44
Pakistani 1
Iranian 2
Bangladeshi 3
This includes 13 school age children (5-17 years of age) and 3 infants There are 85 adults
WE MUST BRING AN END TO THE PACIFIC SOLUTION
