Top UN Envoy In Afghanistan Strongly Condemns ‘Brutal Slaying’ Of Aid Workers
The top United Nations envoy in Afghanistan today voiced shock at Monday’s “brutal slaying” of two local workers of a non-governmental organization (NGO) in southern Kandahar, strongly condemning it as “yet another tragic and unacceptable act” against the aid community.
“This and other recent attacks in Kandahar urgently point towards the need to make more forces available to the provincial authorities in order to enable them to uphold the law and facilitate the expansion of reconstruction,” Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Special Representative Jean Arnault said in a statement issued by his spokesman.
The two Afghan employees were working for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (CHA) in the Panjwayi district of southern Kandahar.
The region has been the scene of various attacks in recent weeks and the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) temporarily suspended all operations, including voter registration, in the area as well as movement within Kandahar city by national and international staff after a roadside bomb attack against a UN convoy last week.
This suspension has now been lifted and limited operations are underway in the southern region on a case-by-case basis, with voter registration sites functioning.
