COLOMBO, FEB. 2. As Sri Lanka gears up to celebrate its 56th Independence Day, calls have been made by groups in the Tamil-majority northern and eastern districts to mark it as a "day of protest.''
The calls, made by people's groups in the north and east, urged the Tamils to raise "black flags,'' avoid "celebrations of any kind,'' and "block traffic'' along a highway, which links Government-held Sri Lanka to areas under the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
"Successive Sri Lankan Governments have denied the fundamental rights of Tamil people'' from the time of Independence,'' a statement calling for the protest issued by the Vavuniya North Consortium of People's Organisations said. The issue of relocating northern High Security Zone (HSZ), raised by the LTTE during the peace talks, continued to hold in focus with the organisation saying that the "Sri Lanka Army (SLA) still occupies private residences, displacing many Tamil families and denying their right to live in their own homes. Tamils displaced by Army occupation are languishing in refugee centres.''
The current political standoff between the President and the Prime Minister, the organisation said, was "for personal gains'' and the "resulting uncertainty'' was being "used as an excuse for not redressing Tamil people's grievances.'' Terming the Independence Day a "day of mourning,'' the organisation called upon "all Tamil-speaking people to show their protest by flying black flags'' and urged vehicle-owners to "avoid using'' the A9 highway on that day.
On a similar note, the Batticaloa People's Organisation "requested residents to avoid having celebrations'' on February 4, and "to fly black flags'' in residences and places of business
Tamils appeal to world community please give us justice and helps to our freedom struggle and urge world nations to stop giving military aid to sri lanka. Sri Lankan government and its armed forces have declared war on the Tamil people and unleashed military terror in order to subjugate them by force. In order to maintain their oppressive rule over the Tamil people the Sinhala occupation army has committed, and continue to commit, horrendous human rights violations in the form of murder/extra-judicial killings/disappearances/ rape /torture etc with impunity.Tamils lost every rights human should have and face ethnics clearance, our home land occupied by arm forces over millions Tamils genocides and our daily life in dark prison.sinhala state of sri lanka use its governments labels to cover up state of terror and continue to lies and give false information's about Tamils freedom strug
Yours Sincerely Mrs M.Reetha
