Security Council to focus on African conflicts this month - new President
Wars in Africa will command the attention of the United Nations Security Council, but the 15-member panel will also
closely track events in Iraq and the Middle East, the President for February said today.
Ambassador Wang Guangya of China, which holds the rotating Presidency for this month, told a press briefing that the
Council would hold consultations or open meetings on Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Somalia,
Liberia and Central Africa.
"Conflicts in Africa will remain the focus of attention of the Security Council, but we will continue to follow closely
developments in Iraq, the Middle East and other areas," he said.
Mr. Wang said the attention on Africa would not prevent the Council from continuing "to closely follow developments" in
other hotspots around the world. Among others, the Council has scheduled consultations or briefings during February on
Kosovo and Timor-Leste.
