Ticking time bomb for Iranians in detention
Please note that in the next few weeks, injunctions lodged in various courts for many Iranians held in the BAXTER and PORT HEDLAND detention centres are due to expire.
Depending on the reasons these injunctions were lodged with the courts, they may hold after a court case to be decided on 6 February, or more than one hundred Iranians may face forcible deportation under the secret Memorandum of Understanding between Australia and Iran.
Regardless of the rhetoric of the Australian government, many of the Iranians who came to Australia, fled a regime that exercises its control of political dissidents through over seventy forms of torture and punishment. As the current turmoil in Iran around the "democratic" election shows, there is a deeply entrenched conflict between the elected government and the ruling religious council.
LIVE FOOTAGE OF TORTURE
Project SafeCom has a limited number of copies of CD-ROM's available with footage of these torture methods. The 15-minute clips show footage of people being buried up to the waist, and then being stoned to death, as well as a public flogging session of 'an offender'. The quality of the footage is "not very good", but useful if no other sources are available.
The footage was smuggled out of Iran, and first transferred on mini-dv tapes, then transferred to a PC.
Five copies have been prepared for Australia's major television outlets. Please contact us on 0417 090 130 to request a copy.
