For Immediate Release
MEMORIAL MARCH FOR TOM HURNDALL IN RAFAH FRIDAY
[Rafah, GAZA] On Friday January 16, the ISM Rafah, together with the Children's Parliament and the people of Rafah will demonstrate in response to the death of our colleague and friend, Thomas Hurndall. Tom succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, January 13 in a London hospital, nine months after he was shot in the head from an Israeli sniper tower on the border of Rafah, whilst attempting to remove children from the line of Israeli fire.
This memorial march and demonstration protests the targeting of innocent internationals and Palestinians by the Israeli military, which has left over 2700 dead and tens of thousands injured over the course of the last three years. Marchers will also protest the almost complete closure on Gaza, which has recently been intensified, rendering it almost impossible for internationals to witness and report the daily war crimes committed by the Israeli Army against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
The demonstrators will gather at 10 am in front of the ISM office in Rafah and proceed to the spot in Yibenah near the Towhead Mosque where Tom was shot. There the mourners will lay flowers on the site of Tom's shooting and pay their respects to Tom and all victims of Israel's occupation. The Israeli military watchtower, from which Tom was shot, still overlooks this site.
Yibenah is the site of the past two invasions into Rafah which have left almost 200 houses demolished, 30 people dead (of which the majority were unarmed civilians) and close to 2000 homeless.
