“Iran’s earthquake survivors still need our help,” says NZ Aid Agency
More than 2 weeks on from the catastrophic earthquake that levelled much of the ancient Iranian city of Bam, the need
for adequate shelter, hygiene and medical care is growing. “The people of Bam still desperately need our help as they
begin to recover from the earthquake’s devastation,” says CWS National Director Jill Hawkey.
New Zealand aid agency Christian World Service (CWS) is part of an international network responding to the humanitarian
crisis in Iran. Already 10,000s of cans of food have been airlifted in for emergency food rations along with hundreds of
tents and medical supplies that will serve 100,000 people for three months. “With the homeless facing bitterly cold
temperature of -10 degrees Celsius overnight, adequate shelter is one of the most urgent priorities,” says Jill Hawkey.
CWS partners are providing medical services. “They have treated several hundred people over the last few days. Some of
them were badly injured, some of them suffering from pneumonia made worse by freezing temperatures at night” says Jill
Hawkey. “We have been told that many survivors seen by the medical team had been ignoring their smaller injuries and
were happy just to be alive, yet after a few days had realised they needed medical attention.” As people seek to rebuild
their lives, CWS partner organisations will be offering trauma counselling.
Reconstruction of water and sanitation systems and water purification equipment are also being supported.
CWS is appealing for donations to assist this work for Iran’s earthquake survivors. “We have always found New
Zealander’s especially generous when earthquake devastates communities around the world. We want to thank those people
who have already helped and remind others that the need in Bam is still great”. CWS has a target of $100,000. Donations
