Launch of ‘drau-ni-salato’ award for worst TNC or company in Fiji in 2003
The Pacific Network on Globalisation (PANG) and Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy (ECREA) will be
holding a media conference to launch, introduce and explain the inaugural ‘drau-ni-salato’ award for the worst
Transnational Corporation (TNC) and company operating in the Fiji Islands in 2003.

The ‘drau-ni-salato’ award is a symbolic gesture to be given to a transnational corporation or company that has the
most negative impact in Fiji in each or all of the following fields: abuse of workers/conditions, political
interference, environmental damage, cultural imperialism, monopoly, profiteering, running ideological crusade,
unemployment, impact on women, health, and safety of workers and the public. The term drau-ni-salato was chosen for this
award as in the Fijian language it refers to the leaf of a plant that causes an irritating itch.
Nominations forms are available and will be called for from the public on the worst TNC or company for the award. The
4-member judging panel for this year’s award includes a high chief and prominent lawyer, a USP academic, a development
specialist, and a social worker and Catholic priest.
