Hong Kong to host next WTO ministerial meeting
The sixth ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) will be held in Hong Kong, China, Chairman of the fifth WTO ministerial meeting in Cancun and Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez said in Mexico on Sep. 14.
The date of the meeting has not yet been decided. But analysts said that it might be held sometime in 2004 although such meeting is normally held biennially.
They said the fact that the Cancun meeting ended on Sunday without reaching any agreement poses a big challenge for the Doha Development Agenda, which was launched in 2001 in the Qatari capital and is supposed to complete by the end of 2004.
A Hong Kong delegate said Hong Kong has received support from all its major trade partners to host the next WTO ministerial meeting.
