Molly & Mobarak
SYNOPSIS
In late 2001, ninety Afghan asylum seekers from the Hazara ethnic minority arrived in the NSW town of Young having been recruited to work at the local abattoir. Among them is 23-year-old Mobarak Tahiri.
Documentary-maker Tom Zubrycki follows Mobarak as he befriends high-school teacher Molly and her mother Lyn. Against the backdrop of Molly and Mobarak's burgeoning relationship, a picture of the town emerges through characters such as Tony Hewson, the abattoir manager who recruited the Afghans, and Anne Bell, the teacher who organises English classes for the refugees. The observational narrative is played out against the backdrop of a divided community still haunted by the memory of anti-Chinese riots during the 1860's gold-rush.
Molly and Mobarak is a timely and revealing documentary that so clearly illustrates the human cost of our government foreign-policy decisions.
Tom Zubrycki's last major film was The Diplomat about Jose Ramos-Horta and his campaign to secure the independence of East Timor. Molly & Mobarak was premiered at the Sydney Film Festival to much acclaim and has since played at the Melbourne and Brisbane Film Festivals.
Molly & Mobarak an 85 minute feature documentary.
