Greens call for the withdrawal of Robert Lenhard, who opposed McCain-Feingold.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Green Party members sharply criticized Democrats for selecting Robert Lenhard, an opponent of campaign finance reform, for a seat on the Federal Election Commission.
"Lenhard was a prominent legal opponent of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act," said Marnie Glickman, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. "Democrats should withdraw support for Lenhard's nomination immediately. It's shocking that Tom Daschle and Nancy Pelosi would choose a prominent anti-McCain Feingold lawyer to sit on the FEC."
Greens warn that, if confirmed, Lenhard may persuade the FEC to create even more loopholes to McCain Feingold, which restricts 'soft money' contributions from corporations and unions. Last week, the FEC ruled that corporations may give contributions to finance presidential nominating conventions.
"The FEC decision will allow the Democratic and Republican conventions next year to become an advertisement for corporate logos and corporate interests," said national party co-chair Jo Chamberlain, who noted that the Green Party refuses to accept corporate money for the party, for its political campaigns, or for nominating conventions.
The Green convention will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in June 2004.
