Powell's evidence at life-&-death "trial" of 26 million Iraqis
The Evidence
US Secretary of State Colin Powell's statement to the United Nation Security Council today in New York gave the best new evidence in the possession of the USA demonstrating that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. This highly technical evidence is best judged by the weapons inspectors, but raises an important question: Why was this evidence withheld from the inspectors until now? Powell's performance is like withholding evidence from the police and suddenly producing it during the trial.
The Court"
The "court" where 26 million Iraqis are on trial for their lives is the UN Security Council. The United Nations Organization is the world's best and only war-preventing and peace-promoting organization. To come to this organization seeking justification for a war is like going to the fire department and asking for permission to start a fire.
The "Accused"
The accused in this trial is not Saddam Hussein, but the 26 million people of Iraq. It is these people who face a very real "execution" by the immense military fire-power that the US has assembled. The people of Iraq are literally on trial for their lives. The UN has estimated 500,000 mostly civilian casualties in the threatened war. Such losses would be a monstrous crime, totally unjustified by any evidence yet presented by the weapons inspectors or by the USA or the UK.
