CONTROVERSY OVER PORNOGRAPHY ON TV
http://www.tahitipresse.pf/depeche.php?idrub=2=46=2350=2=1
PAPE'ETE (Tahiti-Presse/Pacific Media Watch): Five women from Tahitian opposition parties claim there is too much pornography and violence on TV screens in French Polynesia, reports Tahiti-Presse Online.
They add that public funds should not sponsor pornographic and violent programmes.
The five women - Tea Hirshon and Tamara Bopp Du Pont from the pro-independence Tavini Huiraatira, Marie-Laure Vanizette and Thilda Fuller from the pro-autonomy Fetia Api, an independent MP Nicole Bouteau - teamed up to criticize programmes aired on TNS, a TV channel funded by a public establishment, the Post Department of French Polynesia.
The vice-president of the government of French Polynesia Edouard Fritch said individual freedom was at stake over the issue.
He said parents' responsibility was the answer and that the opposition only raised this issue "because it cannot find anything to criticize about our economic and social policies".
TNS has 10,100 subscribers scattered on several islands of French Polynesia.
A similar debate about TV programmes is on the agenda of the French National Assembly.
