Update
Israeli troops occupy medical centers and open fire on ambulance in Nablus August 29, 2002 16:45
The situation in Nablus is currently very critical. The Israeli army has occupied the Palestinian governorate headquarters and the Red Crescent center in the city. The Palestinian Medical Relief building is surrounded and Israeli troops are preventing ambulances from moving freely.
At about 16:00 Israeli troops opened fire at a Medical Relief ambulance that was transporting a patient to hospital. Neither the medical staff nor the patient inside the ambulance was injured, but only luck prevented a tragedy.
Another ambulance transporting Ahmad Abdul Karim, a nine-year-old leukemia-patient, to life saving treatment at the Rafidia hospital in Nablus, was held at an Israeli military checkpoint for two and a half hours. The ambulance has just been released and given permission to continue to bring the boy to hospital. So far 70 Palestinians have died because they were prevented from receiving medical treatment.
Nablus has been kept under curfew for 68 consecutive days. This morning it was announced on Israeli radio that the curfew would be lifted in the city. When people took to the streets Israeli troops opened fire on them and people were forced to go back to their homes.
