Two Tahiti Daily Newspapers Still On Strike

PAPE'ETE, Tahiti (ATP/Pacific Media Watch): Journalists, technicians and printers at the two Tahiti daily newspapers, La Dépêche de Tahiti and Les Nouvelles de Tahiti, are still on strike, Tahiti Presse reports.

Negotiations between the two trade unions, A Tia I Mua and CSIP, and the newspaper's executives have come to a standstill.

No round of negotiations were held during the weekend.

After one week of unsuccessful talks, striking journalists said they only wanted to discuss matters with the owners of the newspapers, the Hersant press group in Paris.

Technicians from the layout department and printers are also on strike.

Journalists are asking for better wages.

Printers want employees working on the nightshift to be paid more.

About 150 employees work on the two daily newspapers.

The Hersant press group owns almost all the daily newspapers in French Polynesia and New Caledonia.

The strike started on Monday, August 19.
