Extensive Triangle Coverage Marks 911 Anniversary
Triangle Television is to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with extensive coverage of the
tragic events and their ongoing impact.
Among the programmes set to air around the September 11 anniversary are documentaries on the attacks and their after
effects on the people of New York City, a German-made special on the economic impact of the attacks, a memorial concert
and a critical investigation of media coverage.
'Remembered', a live four and a half hour tribute, will mark the actual anniversary of the attacks.
Triangle Television Chief Executive Officer Jim Blackman says the extensive coverage being assigned to the anniversary
is because the September 11 attacks were a landmark event in world history and continue to touch our everyday lives.
"New Zealand may be geographically distant from the United States, but New Zealanders strongly identify and empathise
with the U.S., its people and their culture."
The first scheduled programme, due to screen on Monday, September 9 from 6.15pm to 6.45pm, is a Made-in-Germany special
on the attacks' economic impact.
It will be followed on Tuesday, September 9 from 8.30pm to 9pm with a Paper Tiger TV documentary featuring on-the-street
footage and interviews.
On Tuesday, September 10 at 8.30pm, 'The Voices of New York City in Mourning', tells of a city coming to terms with the
aftermath of September 11 and looks at the potential violence of a protracted war. New York City residents offer
spontaneous memorials as they begin to move from mourning to a quest for peace and justice. The programme ends with the
first NYC peace march which shows how the peace movement has coalesced with a broader drive for economic and social
justice.
The programme also looks critically at US policy leading up to the World Trade Centre attack, and documents media
coverage and the racial backlash against Arab-Americans.
The actual anniversary of the attacks will be marked by 'Remembered', a WorldNet live four and a half hour tribute
commencing at 11.30pm on September 11 and running through til 5am the following morning.
Then on Thursday, September 12, 'Turning Tragedy into War', screens from 7.30pm to 8pm.
A critical investigation on media coverage of September 11 made by Paper Tiger TV, it counteracts the war-driven, racist
spin perpetuated by corporate media and backgrounds US involvement in the Middle East. It uncovers how the media took
advantage of fear and confusion in US public opinion and looks at the anti-war movement.
On Sunday, September 15 from 4.00pm to 5.30pm, Triangle screens 'September 11 Memorial Concert' featuring Beethoven's
Symphony No.9 played by the German Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Kent Nagano. It also includes a summary of events
relating to September 11 and discusses European reactions.
The anniversary coverage wraps up on Monday, September 16 when 'Focus 9.11 One Year After' screens from 5.00pm to
5.30pm.
Thoughout the week, many of Triangle's regular programmes including 'Journal', 'NewsHour', 'The McLaughlin Group' and
'To The Contrary', will also focus on the tragedy and its aftermath. As well, as Triangle Television continues to secure
high profile programmes from around the world, more documentaries examining the events of September 11 may be included
in our schedule.
