SUVA: Fiji will today witness the opening of another chapter in the history of the country's print media with the
arrival of the first Chinese-language newspaper, the Daily Post reports.
The paper will be called The Daily Chinese M@ail and will be inserted in the Daily Post.
The promoter of the newspaper, William Wu, said the newspaper would appear daily and it would be in the Mandarin
language.
"There will be at least about a minimum of four pages every day," Wu said.
"The newspaper is in a way to promote the culture, the language and traditions and to bring all the Chinese people in
Fiji and the world together."
Daily Post publisher and general manager Ranjit Singh said this was an exciting development for his organisation.
"Just five months ago we launched our Hindi weekly, Raneek Jyoti," Singh said.
"Last month, we introduced the Rotuman paper, No'ia Rotuma, as an insert.
"Tomorrow it comes out as a stand-alone Rotuman newspaper to hit the streets in Fiji and Rotuma [a northern island in
Fiji with an ethnic Polynesian community].
"Today we commence with the Daily Chinese M@ail insert on a daily basis. So despite doom and gloom, we are a dynamic
organisation on the move."
* Fiji's Daily Post Company Ltd group has had a controlling Fiji government interest since February 1999, but the
newspaper has generally maintained editorial independence.
Apart from the Hindi, Rotuman and Chinese-languages, the company also publishes a long-established Fijian weekly,
Volasiga.
The company also has a partnership with the country's leading website, FijiLive, www.fijilive.com
