1) East Timor: Jakarta Rejects Renewed Calls for International Tribunal 16/10/00 (Lusa) Senior East Timorese leader Jose Ramos Horta, charging Indonesia had broken its promises of justice, has called on the United Nations Security Council to set up an international war crimes court for atrocities committed in the territory last year.
2) East Timor: Militias Jeopardize Aid, World Bank Warns Indonesia 16/10/00 (lusa) The World Bank reaffirmed Thursday that its efforts to aid the reform and relaunching of Indonesia´s staggering economy was conditioned by Jakarta´s efforts to rein in anti-East Timor militia bands in West Timor.
3) Hope of prosecutions 25 years after Balibo killings 16/10/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) A quarter century ago, five young television newsmen from Sydney and Melbourne were shot and stabbed to death while trying to surrender to Indonesian soldiers at the village of Balibo. But now, in what still seems a scarcely believable twist of history, a half-dozen senior police from around the world, working from a room in the former Indonesian Army headquarters in Dili, are moving steadily towards prosecutions in the Balibo case.
4) Leader Calls for Timor War Tribunal 16/10/00 (AP 13/10/00) Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos-Horta said Thursday the time has come for the Security Council to establish an international war crimes tribunal for East Timor because Indonesia has lost all credibility in bringing those responsible for last year's deadly rampage to justice.
