CANBERRA: Australia's Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, has applauded the signing of a peace deal for the Solomon Islands, reports Radio Australia.
The agreement was signed at the Garbutt airforce base in the northern Australian city of Townsville where 130 delegates have been engaged in talks for six days.
Downer says Australians should be proud of their contribution towards ending the ethnic violence in Solomon Islands that has claimed more than 100 lives.
"This is an enormous breakthrough after months of violence in the Solomons Islands. We're very pleased to have made a contribution towards bringing the parties together."
