William Cohen urged Indonesia’s civilian president Saturday to demonstrate his control over the military by cracking
down on militias which killed three UN workers in West Timor.

7) Ogata says no quick UN return to West Timor 18/09/00 (Reuters) ISLAMABAD - The United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees, Sadako Ogata, said on Friday she would not return any aid workers to Indonesian West Timor till she was
satisfied they would be completely safe.
8) US ‘criticised’ Howard’s Timor letter 18/09/00 (The Age) BANGKOK - Singapore elder statesman Lee Kuan Yew contends in
a new book that the United States was privately critical of Prime Minister John Howard for writing to Indonesia’s then
president, Dr B. J. Habibie, urging an act of self- determination in East Timor.

9) Update on West Timor activities 18/09/00 (IOM) GENEVA - After the events of last week and the closure of our West
Timor offices, IOM is currently discussing with the Government of Indonesia, UN agencies and others, the security
prerequisites needed to restart repatriations to East Timor.
10) WFP: Emergency Report No. 37 of 2000 18/09/00 (World Food Program) a) WFP suspended its programme in West Timor,
following the killing of three UNHCR humanitarian aid workers in Atambua. Ongoing threats of violence against staff and
property, both real and perceived, have resulted in the closure of WFP offices in Atambua and Kupang and redeployment of
staff to projects in other parts of Indonesia.
