SUVA: The University of the South Pacific journalism programme has launched an "online classroom" and is delivering education and training resources for three media courses through the Internet this semester.
Journalism is the first programme to do this at the university's main Laucala campus and this follows the successful web-based delivery of courses by USP's law school at the Emalus campus in Vanuatu.
The interactive delivery is being used by students from Fiji, New Zealand and Samoa in advanced media law, journalism research and special topics in journalism.
The new postgraduate diploma and masters programme which was approved by the university council in May is also expected to offer course materials by the Internet.
"This is a tremendous step forward for the millennium," said journalism coordinator David Robie.
"We have already had an integrated online and digital photography production component of the courses for the past two years.
"But this new delivery of materials in media law and journalism research is designed to supplement our face-to-face practical teaching and workshops - not replace them.
"It is especially helpful for part-time media industry students and others based off campus to keep up with the programme."
