1) East Timor leaders to stay on 28/08/00 (AP) DILI - In a dramatic turnaround, East Timor independence leader Alexandre
``Xanana'' Gusmao and Nobel peace laureate Jose Ramos-Horta vowed Sunday to stay on at the head of the territory's main
political group.
2) Jakarta sends troops to defend aid workers in West Timor 28/08/00 (AFP) JAKARTA - Indonesia's military command has
sent a brigade of troops to defend aid workers helping East Timorese refugees in West Timor, the state Antara news
agency announced.
3) Women refugees held as sex slaves by militia thugs 28/08/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) SUAI - When the United Nations
Human Rights Commissioner, Ms Mary Robinson, visited this shattered south-western border town this month she was

commence maritime boundary negotiations in October, with East Timor seeking a median line giving it sovereignty over
proven petroleum reserves, a senior East Timorese official said Saturday.
6) War crimes lawyer to study 1975 invasion 28/08/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) DILI - A senior United Nations prosecutor
investigating Indonesian war crimes in East Timor will compile a report on atrocities committed after the bloody 1975
invasion in which up to 200,000 Timorese were killed.
7) Trauma healing in conflict-torn areas 28/08/00 (BusinessWorld Philippines) Thirty participants from different parts
of Asia came together to share stories of trauma and healing at the Mindanao Peace Institute held last month.

8) First sentence carried out 28/08/00 (UNTAET) DILI - The first criminal sentence in East Timor was carried out today
in the Dili District Court. A 28-year man was sentenced to 15 years in jail for the murder of a 12-year old child in
March. The case has been heard in four court proceedings since 26 July.
