Legalize It! The Politics of Pot ----- The Fight for Medical Marijuana from Washington D.C. to San Francisco
Patient advocates have recently taken the issue of decriminalizing medical marijuana to the ballot box with increasing success. California's Proposition 215 and Washington D.C.'s Initiative 59 were mandates by the people demanding an end to the U.S. prohibition on cannabis use by the seriously and terminally ill. Due to the success of these efforts, local, state and federal authorities have stepped up attempts to thwart the will of the voters.
Join ACT UP D.C. co-founder Wayne Turner and activists from ACT UP San Francisco's medical marijuana dispensary for a free community update on the legalization of cannabis. Hear how Congressman Bob Barr (R-GA) held D.C.'s Initiative 59 election results hostage for eleven months, and the events behind the initiative's three year struggle -- two petition drives, 32,000 signatures, four lawsuits, and the death of its original sponsor Steve Michael. Learn about ACT UP San Francisco's opposition to city-issued marijuana I.D. cards -- a costly invasion of privacy and a violation of the spirit of Prop. 215 that will lead to the tracking and prosecution of medical marijuana users by our local health and police departments.
