NEWS
1) Local NGOs pressure UNTAET on Oecusse 19/07/00 (La'o Hamutuk Bulletin) DILI - Ever since the Indonesian military and
its militia destroyed Timor Lorosa'e last September, the people of Oecusse have been unable to realize their right to
freedom of movement. The isolation of the enclave's people has been largely due to the lack of transportation available
to connect them with the rest of East Timor.
2) Evaluation of UNTAET's humanitarian aid process 19/07/00 (La'o Hamutuk Bulletin) DILI - The Humanitarian Assistance
and Emergency Rehabilitation Pillar recently released its three-part assessment of the Consolidated Appeal Process
(CAP).
3) Funding for East Timor: Charity or Justice? 19/07/00 (La'o Hamutuk Bulletin) DILI - At the recently concluded meeting
in Lisbon of international donors to East Timor, UNTAET asked for an additional US$16 million to fund the East Timorese
administration of the evolving civil service. Fortunately, a general commitment to provide the funds was forthcoming
from the donor community.
4) Protecting East Timor's Environment 19/07/00 (La'o Hamutuk Bulletin) DILI - On 30 June the National Consultative
Council (NCC) passed a regulation which aims to protect various natural habitats and important historical and cultural
places in Timor Lorosa'e.
5) Planning for national broadcasting 19/07/00 (UNESCO) DILI - The mountainous topography of East Timor presents several
difficulties to the creation of a nation-wide broadcasting system for both radio and television. It is already difficult
enough to set up a telephone system based on a radio network relying on line of sight contact between relays.
6) East Timor to join community of the Portuguese speaking countries 19/07/00 (XINHUA) LUANDA - East Timor will join the
Community of the Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) as its eighth member once it gains full sovereignty.
