1) UN fears emergence of local vigilante groups in East Timor 03/05/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) DILI - A day after United
Nations riot police swooped on armed gangs running amok in Dili, UN peacekeepers have raised concerns about another
potential law and order problem: military-style neighbourhood watch groups.
2) Jakarta jets 'patrolled border'. 03/05/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) Dili: The Indonesian Air Force was apparently
flexing its muscle along East Timor's border a day before the interception last week by its warplanes of five unarmed
Australian military aircraft.
3) 'Former Indonesian minister killed journalists' 03/05/00 (Straits Times) JAKARTA -- Former Information Minister Yunus
Yosfiah has been accused of murdering five Western journalists in East Timor in 1975 by a new witness who gave evidence
on an Australian television show.
4) East Timor rebuilds 03/05/00 (AsiaWeek) For now, the trappings of a nation - a civil service, parliament, central
bank, health services, schools - are mostly on hold. There are a new court system, complete with East Timorese judges
and prosecutors, and the beginnings of a police force. However, basic needs remain the priority for the U.N.
Transitional Administration in East Timor and the islanders' National Consultative Council, which have met regularly
since December.

arson, murder and looting in September they filled the classrooms of Dili's secondary schools with drums of fuel to
ensure maximum damage when they torched the buildings.

authorities are serious about bringing to justice Eurico Guterres, East Timor 's most notorious militia commander,
appear to be premature.
7) Timor refugees fear return home over harassment reports 03/05/00 (AFP) GENEVA, May 2 (AFP) - The flow of East
Timorese refugees signing up to be repatriated from camps in West Timor is "grinding to a halt" because of fears they
could be harassed on their return, the UN's refugee agency UNHCR said Tuesday.
8) Pertamina seals US$7M oil products deal with UNTAET 03/05/00 (Dow Jones Newswires) SINGAPORE -- Indonesia's
state-owned oil major Pertamina (P.PTM) has signed a US$7 million deal to sell oil products to the United Nations
Transitional Administration in East Timor, or UNTAET, a company source told Dow Jones Newswires Tuesday.

9) Response to East Timor and Indonesia crisis 03/05/00 (Catholic Relief Services) EAST TIMOR - Survival has been the
primary concern of the people of East Timor after the scorched earth policy of the militias left few buildings or
facilities in their towns and villages in post-ballot violence last September. Catholic Relief Services has completed
food distributions to the people of Baucau and Viqueque districts in the eastern part of the new country.
10) Repatriation at a halt 03/05/00 (UNHCR) TIMOR - The repatriation program from West Timor has practically come to a
halt. Only a few dozen people have registered to return to East Timor over the past week.
11) UN and Indon open first land crossing between East and West Timor 03/05/00 (UN) DILI - The first land border
crossing between East Timor and Indonesia opened today in Batugade, according to the United Nations mission in East
Timor.
12) Zero tolerance for machetes and sticks 02/05/00 (UNTAET) DILI - The Transitional Administrator, Sergio Vieira de
Mello, declared a policy of zero tolerance for individuals carrying objects that could be used as weapons, such as
machetes, knives, iron bars, clubs or sticks, after a violent disturbance on Sunday in Dili.
