training militias in West Timor for an invasion into East Timor next month despite its continued denials, according to a
West Timorese church leader and a human rights organisation.

shelters of bamboo and blue plastic tarpaulins, the militias still continue to wield influence over the 50,000 refugees

suspects in human rights cases in East Timor are proceeding too slowly, in the opinion of UN Human Rights High

Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed the conclusion of an agreement between the United Nations mission in East

7) Gusmao Unhappy with Pace of Aid, Reconstruction 07/04/00 (Lusa) Rio de Janeiro - East Timor independence leader
Xanana Gusmao, seeking aid from Brazil, has said that his country remains destroyed and his people facing hunger despite
international pledges to reconstruct the territory.
8) Brazil Bishops offer aid 07/04/00 (Folha de Sao Paulo) Sao Paulo - On the first day of his official visit to Brazil,
Timorese resistance leader Xanana Gusmao, 53, was welcomed by President Fernando Henrique Cardoso [FHC] and received the
first concrete aid actions.
9) Australian crime investigators to help restore order. 07/04/00 (AAP) SYDNEY - Six of New South Wales' top crime
agency investigators would be sent to East Timor next month to assist local police in restoring law and order, the NSW
government announced today.

10) Timor emergency update 07/04/00 (UNHCR) Coordinating Minister for Welfare, Basri Hasanuddin, indicated that
assistance would continue during a three-month period, to allow East Timorese to decide and take measures on whether
they would remain or return to East Timor.
