INVESTIGATION - INCIDENT ON HMAS NEWCASTLE
The Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral David Shackleton, said today an ongoing investigation into the circumstances which led
to a female crew member of HMAS Newcastle being reported overboard in the early hours of 4 February has resulted in six
navy personnel being disciplined for their involvement in the incident.
The investigation is being carried out by the Naval Investigative Service (NIS) and may lead to further serious charges
being laid. The investigation is likely to be completed by next week.
In addition, the Maritime Commander, Rear Admiral John Lord, has initiated a Command, Leadership and Management Review
into HMAS Newcastle. It is expected that this review will be completed in early March.
Vice Admiral Shackleton said that he had met with the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, Mr Bruce Scott, today
to brief the Minister on the progress of investigations into the incident and the steps being taken to reinforce his
requirement for the highest standards of behaviour.
Mr Scott indicated he was satisfied with the Chief of Navy's handling of the matter.
Vice Admiral David Shackleton further said the Navy is committed to providing a safe and harmonious workplace for its
personnel. The circumstances of this incident are contrary to Navy's values and work practices and have saddened the
Navy community.
